Lloret de Mar is a town with over a thousand years of history. Pioneer of European tourism in the 1950s, over the years the modern, dynamic town of Lloret has become a major tourist destination. Meeting place of different cultures, Lloret has managed to maintain its own traditional customs and identity while incorporating new values as befits a cosmopolitan town. The Lloret cultural agenda offers an attractive programme of music and sports events as well as a wide range of activities centred on local traditions, folklore and festivals.
The wide range of complementary facilities and excellent sports infrastructure makes Lloret a favourite venue for both national and international sporting encounters and tournaments. For this reason Lloret de Mar was granted the "Sports Tourism Destination" (DTE) award by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia in recognition of its specialised services for visiting sportsmen and sportswomen. Hiking, mountain biking, snorkelling, scuba diving and kayaking are some of the many activities that will enable the visitor to explore every nook and cranny of the area around Lloret.
Lloret de Mar is and always has been a meeting point of different cultures and traditions. This is reflected in the wide gastronomic offer, ranging from the typically Mediterranean Catalan cooking to exotic restaurants and fashionable signature cuisine. Local chefs still serve fresh fish dishes and "sea and mountain" (seafood and meat) combinations but they are also keen innovators who enjoy adding new flavours to traditional dishes.Fine cooking is available all year round. However, lovers of good food should take special note of two gastronomic events that are held every year in Lloret: the Rice Festival and the "Cuina de l'Art" Festival.
Lloret de Mar has a wide range of shops selling all sorts of products and articles. After tourism, shopping represents Lloret's second most important economic activity, with about one thousand different commercial entities in the town. Throughout the year, various fairs and markets are held, such as the "Botiga al Carrer" (local shops selling their wares outdoors), the Wedding Trade Fair "Un i Un" and the Medieval Fair, among others. The Lloret de Mar indoor market is open from Monday to Saturday and there is also an open-air street market every Tuesday.
Good tourist infrastructure, modern facilities and a wide range of hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment make Lloret a major tourist destination. After sunset, Lloret de Mar nightlife takes over and offers visitors a wide and varied range of night-time leisure activities, different ambiances all in the same area and lots of fun right into the early hours of the morning.
